Battle of the Beaks: A Natural Selection Lab Activity
In Mr. Pagawisan's Sophomore Biology class, students brought Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection to life through an exciting lab activity called "Battle of the Beaks"!
Students took on the role of finches, just like those Darwin observed in the Galapagos Islands. Using different "beaks"—tweezers, forks, binder clips, and clothespins—they competed to collect various "foods" such as beans, macaroni, rubber bands, and toothpicks. Each beak had its own advantages and challenges, perfectly illustrating how certain adaptations can improve survival in different environments.
To make things even more fun, the students who gathered the fewest "foods" in each group had to do the chicken dance, filling the classroom with laughter and energy while reinforcing key concepts about natural selection.
It was a day of hands-on learning, friendly competition, and unforgettable fun. Great job to all the students for making the lesson come alive!

CONGRATULATIONS to the DCHS Forensics team for coming home with a 3rd place trophy from the Class A State Speech and Drama this last weekend in Laurel! It has been a long time since Dawson has earned this high of honors in Forensics, and we are very proud of them for what they accomplished this year both individually and as a team. GO DEVILS!!!!!

Last year, we won and would like to continue that trend this year. Whichever class donates the most will get bragging rights and ice cream treats. Bring your tabs to donate either in the containers outside the office or to the teachers with jars in their classrooms (Fawns - Freshman, Cohen - Sophomores, Ringen - Juniors, and Reed- Seniors). Class rankings have the seniors in first, sophomores second, freshmen third, and juniors in last place. We have collected 20.5 lbs of tabs thus far and hope to continue to collect more during this final week. Thanks for your help!

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT: The boys/girls varsity basketball games scheduled on February 6th vs. Sidney will be played on Wednesday, February 5th. Girls will begin at 5:30, boys at 7:00.
This year DCHS approached several businesses to create a partnership with us to allow for a new class offering. This class allows students the ability to job shadow and eventually start an intern position or apprentice position with a local business. We hope this leads to careers in the future for our students and allows businesses to meet the needs of possibly hiring future employees from DCHS. While it is still in its beginning stages, we would like to take this opportunity to thank those businesses who have joined in this partnership and we are looking forward to more businesses partnering with us in the future. Not every business will have an intern or apprentice each year, but we eventually hope to expand to meet those needs.
Science made simple yet extraordinary! Mr. Pagawisan's Sophomore Biology class dove into the fascinating world of genetics with a hands-on Strawberry DNA Extraction activity. Using common household items like dishwashing liquid, salt, alcohol, and cheesecloth, the students were amazed to witness firsthand how the DNA of a living organism looks—something many of them had never seen before.
This activity wasn’t just about extracting DNA; it was about sparking curiosity, fostering a deeper understanding of biology, and showing how science can be both accessible and exciting. Moments like these remind us that the wonders of life are closer than we think, even in something as simple as a strawberry.
